The live-action sequel to Universal Pictures and DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon is officially in pre-production, with development rapidly progressing for How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Building on the momentum of the first live-action adaptation, this next installment will reunite director Dean DeBlois with the creative team that brought the original animated trilogy to life. Filming is expected to begin later this year, with pre-production currently focused on set design, visual effects planning, costume development, and location scouting.
Industry insiders looking to get involved should note that department heads are being confirmed, and below-the-line hiring is expected to ramp up soon. Production offices are being established in the Greater Los Angeles area with some international location planning underway.
Returning cast members Mason Thames (Hiccup) and Nico Parker (Astrid) are set to lead the next chapter, while casting for supporting roles and creature performance specialists is underway. Visual effects vendors and concept artists are already onboard, setting the tone for another visually rich fantasy epic.
